 Virtual Intuitive Eating SeriesWelcome to Counseling & Psychological Services' (CAPS) self-guided Virtual Intuitive Eating Series!

Join Amelia Ramirez, LMFT (she/her) as she provides an introduction to Intuitive Eating, describes all 10 Principles, and provides some suggestions for further information and support. In this video series you will learn general information about diet culture and Intuitive Eating, and learn all 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating which are: Reject Diet Culture, Honor Your Hunger, Make Peace with Food, Discover the Satisfaction Factor, Feel Your Fullness, Challenge the Food Police, Cope with Your Feelings with Kindness, Respect Your Body, Movement- Feel the Difference, and Honor Your Health With Gentle Nutrition. This series includes 12 videos of content, and you are welcome to go at a pace that feels right to you.

*Intuitive Eating might not be the best place to start improving your relationship with food if you are currently struggling with disordered eating or an eating disorder. You might need individualized support from a counselor/therapist, registered dietitian, and/or medical provider.

Intuitive Eating Series

  1. Intuitive Eating Introduction (Watch | Slides)
    Learn about the origins of Intuitive Eating, the term "diet culture",  and how diet culture interferes with being an intuitive eater.
  2. Principle 1: Reject Diet Culture (Watch | Slides)
    Identify some common dieting behaviors, visualize the dieting cycle, reflect on how dieting can interfere with someone's life, and learn some common fears of rejecting diet culture.
  3. Principle 2: Honor Your Hunger (Watch | Slides)
    Learn about the effects of dieting on the body and mind, identify hunger sensations, and how to use a hunger and fullness sensations assessment to identify and honor your hunger. 
  4. Principle 3: Make Peace with Food (Watch | Slides)
    Deprivation and guilt often interfere with making peace with food. Learn about the role of habituation related to food, and learn 5 steps to making peace with food.
  5. Principle 4: Discover the Satisfaction Factor (Watch | Slides)
    Learn how to incorporate pleasure and satisfaction into the eating experience. 
  6. Principle 5: Feel Your Fullness (Watch | Slides)
    Identify what messages you've internalized throughout your life that influence when you decide to stop eating. Recognize comfortable satiety rather than uncomfortable fullness and learn some ways to practice conscious-awareness eating. 
  7. Principle 6: Challenge the Food Police (Watch | Slides)
    Learn how the statements you tell yourself and how your thoughts about food contribute to your feelings and eating behaviors.
  8. Principle 7: Cope with Your Feelings with Kindness (Watch | Slides)
    Identify emotional eating triggers and learn how to recognize and meet your emotional needs.  
  9. Principle 8: Respect Your Body (Watch | Slides)
    Recognize that your body has unique genetics that determine things like eye and hair color, shoe size, and body weight and shape. Learn ways to respect your body even if you feel like you can't love or accept it. Learn about Health at Every Size (HAES).
  10. Principle 9: Movement: Feel the Difference (Watch | Slides)
    Learn how to practice intuitive movement. 
  11. Principle 10: Honor Your Health with Gentle Nutrition (Watch | Slides)
    Our health is determined by multiple factors, not just what we eat. Consider how what you eat is only a part of your overall health, and learn about the term "orthorexia". Learn about the role of a registered dietitian.
